Keep your hooks moving!

Since we started Helping Veterans Blanket Project in April, we have collected over 1000 squares (1005 to be exact). This is enough squares to warm up almost 21 Veterans. To date we have assembled 9 blankets but we will get quicker now that we have 4 of us assembling them. Keep the squares coming ladies... and if you want to join us in assembling blankets please message me!

Thank you for your support

17 squares from Laura H. Facebook contributor.

Thank you Laura!  Laura also sent some squares from the very first project that we all gave up on that I will join with mine and donate to my local animal shelter.  She also sent some personal care items that I will send to the last family we made blankets for since that's who she intended them for.  You are very generous Laura!  Thank you so much!

Upcoming Project: Langland Home for Veterans in Johnson City, TN

Thanks go out to Marie A for helping me to find our next project. We are making at least 7 blankets for Langland Home for Veterans in Johnson City, TN. This home is run by http://www.citizenssoldiersinc.org/ and I have been in phone contact with them - they are very willing and excited to accept our blankets. Blanket #7 is ready for assembly.

Blanket #7 is ready for assembly and includes squares from the following generous contributors:

Darcy B of KS

Marie A of MA

Michelle K of AL

Janice W of ND

Anne G of NC

Susan F of NH

Steph B of NJ

Brenda S of MO

Liz E of MN

Cindy H of MN

Mary Y of MO

Beth P of MA (this is me - I am also joining the squares)

I will be joining this with black and pink yarn because I have not used this for this particular project (7 blankets joined in 7 different colors for 1 family). I have been told that one of the daughters does admit to liking pink ;)

Thank you to all who have contributed squares so far. Remember, this is an ongoing project - so we collect squares regularly. If you have squares you have not sent in yet, please email me and I will provide an address. Hugs4heroes@gmail.com

Thank you for all your help!

Beth

Donations Needed - can you help?

I don't ask. I don't feel comfortable asking. I feel that the squares you take time to make and pay to send are very generous and a great gift and contribution to this project. I have to ask even thought it hurts. If your sending squares, and you can afford to, could you send a couple dollars to help with postage costs for shipping completed blankets? It would really be a great help to the project. Like I said, I hate asking, and I only want you to send if you can afford to.

My Go-To Granny Square

(Click picture to enlarge)
This is the pattern we are using for our Helping Veterans Blanket Project. Finished squares should be about 6 to 6 1/2 " square.

Squares for Blankets

Crochet Hook size “I” (or whatever your normal “gauge” tells you - I crochet a little tight so I normally have to go up 1 size, so I will be using a “J” hook).

Red Heart Super Saver Yarn - (If making for military, please do not use black or any color you would use in a baby blanket.)

You can make them all 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 different colors - its completely up to you.

Lets get started:

NOTE: You will increase each round by 4 stitches per side.

For multi-colored granny:

With color A ,Chain 4, join with slip stitch to first chain from hook to form a circle

Rnd 1: chain 3, 2 double crochet’s in circle ,chain 2 , *3 double crochet’s in circle , chain 2, repeat from * 3 times; join to top chain of beginning chain 3 with slip stitch (starting chain always counts as 1st double crochet). finish off.
[round 1 will have a total of 12 double crochets and 4 chain-2 spaces]

Rnd 2: With color B ,Slip stitch into corner chain-2 space, chain 3. 1 double crochet in same chain-2 space,* 1 double crochet in next 3 double crochets, 2 double crochets into chain-2 corner, chain 2, 2 double crochets in same chain-2 corner space. Repeat from * until you get back to first corner, 2 double crochets in beginning chain-2 space ,chain 2 ; join to top chain of beginning chain-3 with slip stitch. finish off .
[Round 2 will have a total of 28 single crochets and 4 chain-2 spaces]

Rnd 3:With color C ,Slip stitch into corner chain-2 space, chain 3. 1 double crochet in same chain-2 space,* 1 double crochet in next 7 double crochets, 2 double crochets into chain-2 corner, chain 2, 2 double crochets in same chain-2 corner space. Repeat from * until you get back to first corner, 2 double crochets in beginning chain-2 space ,chain 2 ; join to top chain of beginning chain-3 with slip stitch. finish off .
[Round 3 will have a total of 44 single crochets and 4 chain-2 spaces]

Rnd 4: With color D ,Slip stitch into corner chain-2 space, chain 3. 1 double crochet in same chain-2 space,* 1 double crochet in next 11 double crochets, 2 double crochets into chain-2 corner, chain 2, 2 double crochets in same chain-2 corner space. Repeat from * until you get back to first corner, 2 double crochets in beginning chain-2 space ,chain 2 ; join to top chain of beginning chain-3 with slip stitch. finish off .
[Round 4 will have a total of 60 single crochets and 4 chain-2 spaces]

Rnd 5: With color E ,Slip stitch into corner chain-2 space, chain 3. 1 double crochet in same chain-2 space,* 1 double crochet in next 15 double crochets, 2 double crochets into chain-2 corner, chain 2, 2 double crochets in same chain-2 corner space. Repeat from * until you get back to first corner, 2 double crochets in beginning chain-2 space ,chain 2 ; join to top chain of beginning chain-3 with slip stitch. finish off .
[Round 5 will have a total of 76 single crochets and 4 chain-2 spaces]

Thank you to Michelle for re-writing this pattern in a way that is much easier to understand. Michelle has some great video's on YouTube - one of which is below. Be sure to check them out!

Here is a tutorial on the Flat Braid Join - my preferred method of joining squares.

Thank you to Michelle for allowing me to link to her video tutorial. For more of her very helpful crochet video tutorials, please click here.

Our project is Helping Veterans Blanket Project and can be found here. Ours is an ongoing project and you are welcome to join us. Email me @ hugs4heroes@gmail.com when you are ready to send squares and I will provide my address.
